Bold predictions for rest of the Steelers season

Okay Steelers Nation, I’m going to go with a glass that’s not half empty, and one that’s overflowing, with the following predictions.

As we’re all aware, the Steelers have dropped some disappointing games thus far in 2016, but showed incredible promise of that “30+ point offense” which was talked about during training camp. With a large number of injured players returning to full health, the Steelers should be poised to strike following the bye week.

These are my over-the-top expectations following the bye:

Bud Dupree returns to lead team in sacks

This isn’t too far-fetched.

Reports state Dupree could be practicing any day now, and that could have him available as early as next week’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Dupree missed the first half of the season after being placed on IR following training camp. NFL teams are permitted to designate one player off of the Injured Reserve list to return to their team, following a set amount of time that the player must sit out before being eligible to return.

Week 9 would be the first game that Dupree would be technically eligible to play in, if the Steelers were to activate him.

Should he play, he would return alongside current sack leader Cameron Heyward, who has 3 sacks.

Dupree would have 9 games to play catch-up, but considering the next-best totals are from backup linebackers Vince Williams (2) and Arthur Moats (1.5) it’s a safe bet Bud could get the job done, once he’s back into the lineup full-time.

Ryan Shazier will lead the team in interceptions

Also not too out there, is Shazier, a linebacker, leading the team in picks. Opposing teams like to attack the Steelers with dink-and-dunk passes to their backs, as well as tight ends traditionally giving the Steelers fits. Both positions are routinely covered by linebackers, and Shazier already has one interception on the season.

In 2015 S Mike Mitchell lead the defense with 3 picks, and a number of other Steelers had 2 or less; including 4 linebackers (one of which was Shazier, with 1).

If teams continue to attempt to throw down the seam, Shazier could be in position to make a few more plays, and lead the team in interceptions.

William Gay will break Rod Woodson‘s pick six record

William Gay will break a tie with Rod Woodson to set the record for the most interceptions returned for touchdowns in team history with his next pick six of six.

No Steelers defensive back has an interception yet in 2016; Gay had 2 in 2015, one of which was returned for a TD.

This isn’t the most solid prediction, but based on Gay’s number of snaps, he may have the best chance of any of the Steelers corners to pick one off, and take it to the house.

Ben will start against Baltimore

And… I don’t believe this one is too bold!

The Steelers are playing their cards close to their vest, and rightfully so: they do not want their franchise quarterback rushed back too early, causing further setbacks.

However, Ben roamed the sidelines last Sunday, and would not be on his feet if he were under doctor’s orders to rest. He was also throwing in practice this week, and barring any setbacks, we believe he will not only play, but start against the Ravens a week from Sunday.

Le’Veon Bell will surpass 2,000 yards from scrimmage

This is another feasible statistic, despite Bell missing the first three games of this season, he’s already averaging 147.25 yards per game, on pace to gain roughly 1,914.25 yards from scrimmage if he maintains the status quo.

Where would the extra 75 yards come from?

The Steelers get to play some atrocious defenses on their upcoming schedule: the Indianapolis Colts and Cleveland Browns are both giving up more yards on defense than the Steelers.

Pittsburgh gets to play Cleveland twice.

The New York Giants, Buffalo Bills, Dallas Cowboys and Cincinnati Bengals are upcoming opponents that are also among the middle of the pack in total defense. The Browns, Bills, Colts and Bengals are all in the bottom 10 of rushing yards allowed as well.

It’s feasible for Bell to gain an extra 25 yards over his average in 3 of those games; or go off for a huge game too.

So long as no one keeps him in check, 2,000 yards is a fair prediction for one of the game’s best backs.

Antonio Brown doesn’t break his own records, but wins Brandon Marshall bet

Remember when Brandon Marshall wanted to bet his Porsche that he’d outplay Antonio Brown?

Boy, that must seem silly right about now.

Brown hasn’t had the eye-popping numbers he’s had in previous years, but he’s still outperforming a woefully bad New York Jets offense lead by QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. Even with Landry Jones stepping in for Ben Roethlisberger, AB went over the century mark, with 7 receptions for 106 yards.

Brown currently has 48 catches for 592 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Marshall has 30 catches for 472 yards and 2 touchdowns.

With Big Ben returning to the lineup, and the bad defenses referenced above, I don’t see any way (other than, gasp, I won’t say it) that Marshall could catch up.

Steelers win all remaining road games

Saving the best for last, I believe the Steelers have a shot at winning every one of their remaining road games.

Someone is going to say I need my head examined, as Pittsburgh has traditionally been a bad road team, specifically against bad teams on the road. There’s a number of those littered on the remaining 2016 schedule, such as the Ravens, Browns, Colts and even potentially the Bengals or Bills (if they don’t sort things out themselves).

Yet, it’s those opportunities that might change the narrative about Mike Tomlin and his ability to get Pittsburgh pumped up for traveling. The games in Cleveland and Buffalo will be like a home games, as I expect Steelers Nation to pack those away stadiums and have a larger voice than the home fans.

The Thanksgiving Day game in Indy gives a built in day-off for Steelers fans to travel, and since it’s played in a dome, weather isn’t going to deter them from eating their turkey at a rest stop on the way to Lucas Oil Stadium.

That should help deter some of the crowd noise and jitters of playing away from Heinz Field, and break the streak of playing poorly outside of Pittsburgh.
