Steelers sign key pieces for a 2017 title run

Following their departure from the playoffs, the Pittsburgh Steelers went right to work signing several contributors to their 2016 season’s success.

Among those players were a few exclusive rights free agents, who were immediately retained for the 2017 season.

Greg Warren

One of the last players remaining on the roster who has a Super Bowl ring, Greg Warren has been working on a year-to-year deal for some time now.

The team confirmed that the steady long snapper has agreed to come back for another season:

The 35-year-old entered the league in 2005. Due to the nature of his position, he doesn’t take much direct physical contact, which has helped prolong not only his, but other long snappers’ careers.

An odd stat this season, is that Warren recovered a special teams fumble. Seldom do you hear 60’s name called, but it was great to hear it then, and it’s great to hear it as part of this one-year contract.

Jordan Dangerfield

This former undrafted, practice squad player, has gone from long shot to starter during the 2016 season.

While he’s still suited to a backup role, Dangerfield’s defensive play in short appearances, as well as his contributions on special teams, makes him a welcome, quality addition for depth in the secondary.

Cobi Hamilton

Another practice squad to starter story, Hamilton saw a tremendous amount of playing time in 2016, when several Steelers receivers went down with injuries.

Hamilton caught 17 passes for 234 yards and 2 touchdowns during the regular season, and 4 grabs for 54 yards and a TD in the playoffs.

Roosevelt Nix

A key component in the Steelers running game, and also a special teams standout, Rosy Nix will return on a one-year, $615,000 contract.

There’s no flashy statistics to show for the fullback, but Nix has forced fumbles and made clutch tackles on special teams in the past, as well as opening holes for Le’Veon Bell on big gains on offense.

Chris Boswell

Since the article almost feels like a special team’s “who’s who” list, it would not be complete without the Steelers solid kicker signing a one-year tender for 2017:

Boswell almost single-handedly won two different games this season with his leg (Bengals, Chiefs) while setting an NFL record for the number of field goals made in a postseason game, and tying and/or setting other franchise marks for his work in the regular season.

Signing the reliable kicker is a relief, after the disaster the Steelers had following Shaun Suisham‘s career-ending injury two seasons ago.

In two years with Pittsburgh, Boswell has converted on 50 of his 57 field goal attempts, and made all but one of his 63 PAT’s in 27 regular season games.

Boswell is 15-for-15 in field goal attempts in 5 postseason games, but has missed two extra point tries during that same span.

Conclusion

The long snapper and the kicker are back! That’s good news for the Steelers, who will have a lot of consistency on special teams for 2017, while adding Hamilton and Dangerfield complete moves for roster depth.

Roosevelt Nix is a project player who has also paid off with the time invested in him, and his addition to the offense cannot be understated.

Each of these players adds a dimension for the Steelers to attempt to make another deep postseason run in 2017.
