Introducing SCU Steelers Fan Club Spotlight
There is a book that came out last year called “Always a Home Game” by Josh Miller (former Steelers punter) and Shawn Allen. It essentially covers the unbelievable breadth of what we all know as Steelers Nation. Miller and Allen visit all 32 NFL markets and visit “Steelers Bars”.
I bought the book when I was doing a lot of traveling for my “real life job”, and while I certainly didn’t spend 140 days hitting every Steelers-themed bar I could find, I found the stories and the interviews with folks interesting.
So what’s this all leading up to you might ask?
Last weekend my family and I spent our Sunday afternoon at a Dave & Buster’s with SE Steelers PA fan group. This is a bar/restaurant in the heart of Eagles territory and every Sunday during the season it is taken over by a wild and wooly group of Steelers fans.
It was a fun afternoon spent with die-hard fans watching the Steelers play.
And it got me thinking: wow many fan groups, like this one, are there? I know for a fact that there are at least 5 within an easy drive of my house in New Jersey.
So I thought, why not reach out to our fan base, and try and get a little taste of what it’s like to visit these groups and spend your afternoon watching, talking, living and breathing Steelers football with like-minded people. We want to introduce the concept of the Steelers Fan Group Spotlight (please imagine a baroque trumpet fanfare playing as you read that line… it makes it much more dramatic).
Here is the idea. You may know by now that we have a fanmail@steelcityunderground.com (and if not, you do now) email address which we introduced this season to allow you to ask specific questions which we would address during our podcasts (I promise, a new one is coming soon – this week possibly).
We’d like to extend that so that you can also send us your favorite Steelers bar or hangout – or, if you belong to a Steelers fan group that meets somewhere to watch the game together, let us know about that as well.
What we will do is take those incoming emails and pick a group to be the Spotlight group. If we can, we’ll come out to the next gathering, do some live broadcasts via Periscope from the site (and maybe even bring some Steelers swag to give away), and then do a write-up on the group and feature it the following week. That way we can share some stories from Steelers Nation directly, and give some face time and love to the fans who continue to support this team like no other fan base in the world.
So what do you think Nation? Nominate your favorite Steelers bar/Steelers Fan Club/Steelers Hangout and maybe your group can be featured in the (cue the trumpets again…)
Steelers Fan Group Spotlight!
Just send us an email at fanmail@steelcityunderground.com or call our hotline at 203-900-4SCU and nominate your group!
