AFC seeding scenarios going into Week 17
This past weekend mostly solidified both the AFC and NFC playoff picture. In the AFC, each division has been clinched and there are four teams fighting for two wild card spots. Here are the playoff scenarios for each team in the AFC going into Week 17.
#1 New England Patriots (12-3)
After another controversial call in which New England benefited from, the Patriots still took care of business to keep their #1 seed after defeating the Bills.
- Game left: Home vs. Jets
- Win: Win, and the Patriots clinch home-field throughout the playoffs.
- Lose: This opens the door up for the Steelers to steal the #1 seed. If New England loses and Pittsburgh wins, the Steelers would stay home in January.
#2 Pittsburgh Steelers (12-3)
The Steelers took care of business over the weekend and with the Jaguars losing, secured a first round bye. They won with ease, and rested a few starters to finish the game. Although the New England result did not go as Pittsburgh fans may have liked, securing a bye for the first time since the 2010-2011 season is a huge win.
- Game left: Home vs. Browns
- Win: Win and the Steelers will keep the #2 seed, if not higher. If New England loses, Pittsburgh will reclaim the #1 seed.
- Lose: The worst thing that could happen to the Steelers this week (in terms of record) is that they would just have another “L” on their record. Losing to the Browns will not drop Pittsburgh any spots. However, losing this weekend would clinch the #1 seed for the Patriots, regardless of how the Jets/Pats game plays out.
#3 Jacksonville Jaguars (10-5)
The Jaguars lost their chance at a first round bye and a chance for the #1 seed this past weekend. The Jaguars had to win and get help, but they could not complete the comeback against Jimmy G and the 49ers, eliminating them from contention for a first round bye.
- Game left: Away vs. Titans
- Win/Lose: The Jaguars are locked into the #3 seed.
#4 Kansas City Chiefs (9-6)
This past weekend, the Chiefs made sure the Chargers could not steal the division by winning against the Dolphins and secured themselves a spot in the playoffs.
- Game left: Away vs. Broncos
- Win/lose: The Chiefs are locked into the #4 seed.
#5 Baltimore Ravens (9-6)
The Ravens squeaked out a win against the Colts and kept their position to maintain a playoff berth. One more win for the Ravens and an injury-ridden season still found its way into the playoffs.
- Game left: Home vs. Ravens
- Win: Win and the Ravens keep the #5 seed and would find themselves playing their first playoff game against the Chiefs in Kansas City.
- Lose: The Ravens can still make the playoffs with a loss, but they would need help from others in order to stay in the race. To clinch the 5th seed (with a loss to the Bengals), the Ravens would need a loss from the Bills AND Titans. To clinch a playoff birth in general, the Ravens need a loss from either the Bills or Titans.
#6 Tennessee Titans (8-7)
The Titans are quickly falling after losing their last 3 games and find themselves on the brink of making the playoffs or sitting at home for the 9th season in a row.
- Game left: Home vs. Jaguars
- Win: Win and the Titans keep the #6 seed and find themselves (possibly) playing the Jaguars for the second consecutive week, this time in Jacksonville. The good news for Tennessee is that the Jacksonville game this weekend is meaningless for the Jaguars, and the Titans need to take advantage of that.
- Lose: A loss and the Titans would need BOTH the Bills and the Chargers to lose in order to make the playoffs.
In the hunt:
Buffalo Bills (8-7)
Buffalo couldn’t get it done in New England this past weekend and now has themselves on the outside looking in. Going into Week 17, this means that the Bills are going to need a win AND some help to get into the playoffs.
- Game left: Away vs. Dolphins
- Win: The Bills have a couple scenarios where they make the playoffs. The first is that they need the Ravens to lose. The second has the Titans AND Chargers losing, but it wouldn’t hurt if all three teams lost.
- Lose: Eliminated
Los Angeles Chargers (8-7)
The Chargers stayed alive this past weekend by beating the Jets, but are still on the outside looking in. The bottom line for Charger fans is the Titans need to lose this weekend.
- Game left: Home vs. Raiders
- Win: There are two scenarios in which the Chargers make the playoffs. The first has the Ravens winning and the Titans losing. The second has both the Bills and Titans losing.
- Lose: Eliminated
