Plays of the Year: Kenny Pickett with a QB sneak for his first career rushing TD
Steel City Underground presents “Plays of the Year” featuring the top runs, catches, hits and everything else in-between from the Pittsburgh Steelers 2022 season.
Week 4 of the 2022 NFL season featured two 1-2 teams looking to stay out of their respective division’s cellars, when the Pittsburgh Steelers hosted the New York Jets.
Things were looking grim for the Steelers, who entered halftime down 10-6 to their opponent. But those fortunes would change in the second half when head coach Mike Tomlin made a switch at quarterback, benching starter Mitchell Trubisky for first round rookie Kenny Pickett.
Pickett, who played in the same home stadium during his college days at the University of Pittsburgh, was more than your usual fan favorite, as the crowd went bananas with a “Kenny” chant as the signal caller made his debut.
The fans would go crazier in the coming moments of the third quarter, as Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick picked off a Zach Wilson pass – nearly returning it for a touchdown.
From there, it was Pickett’s time to shine, as the Steelers staff gave him the keys to throw on first down from the four-yard line. However, it would be this 3rd-and-1 play that gave Pickett his first career touchdown in the National Football League.
Lining up behind right guard James Daniels, Pickett would not be denied – giving Pittsburgh a 13-10 edge after the successful Chris Boswell PAT.
Pickett would finish on the stat sheet 10-of-13 passing, with three interceptions, but he would also rush for another touchdown later in the quarter. Unfortunately, the day would end with the Steelers falling to the Jets by a final score of 24-20.
