4 for Friday: Steelers top All-Pros, Pro Bowlers

Steel City Underground presents “4 for Fridays,” an off-season series of articles focused on four related Pittsburgh Steelers topics and commentary for fans and members of Steelers Nation.

It’s time to kick off another weekend, but soon Pittsburgh Steelers fans will be looking to spend their time not wishing it was football season but attending training camp and the preseason games. This week, we thought it would be fun to look at the top four All-Pros and Pro Bowl attendees (by appearances and award) in Steelers history.

Jack Lambert

There’s no member of the Steelers that has as many All-Pro designations and Pro Bowl nominations as a player as famed linebacker Jack Lambert. Lambert was named first-team All-Pro six times and nominated to nine Pro Bowl teams.

All-Pro years: 1976, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983

Pro Bowls: 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983

The fact that Lambert was a Pro Bowler six years in a row speaks to the level of play he put onto the field, and was obviously considered when it came time for the Hall Committee to chose Lambert for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Lambert is a four-time Super Bowl champion.

Joe Greene

Technically tied at 14, Greene was named to an amazing 10 Pro Bowls, but was a First-Team All-Pro just four times. That fact is a bit of a head-scratcher considering he was among the league’s greats at defensive tackle. The media chooses All-Pro awards, though, versus the traditional way Pro Bowlers are chosen. Still, ten Pro Bowl nods are a team high for the Steelers franchise.

All-Pro Years: 1972, 1973, 1974, 1977

Pro Bowls: 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1978, 1979

Greene is also a Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee and a four-time Super Bowl champion. He joined Ernie Stautner as the only other Steelers payer to have his jersey officially retired.

Jack Ham

Ham, another great Steelers linebacker and four-time Super Bowl champion, was named an All-Pro six times and was sent to eight Pro Bowls. Ham is also enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

All-Pro Years: 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1978

Pro Bowls: 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980

Mike Webster

Webster, considered by many members of Steelers Nation to be the best center the team has fielded in franchise history, also had five All-Pro awards and nine Pro Bowl nods (13). Webster was a four-time Super Bowl champion and was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the class of 1997.

Webster played two seasons in Kansas City before announcing his retirement on March 11, 1991, after a 17-year NFL career.
