Watch: Steelers interceptions snuff Falcons offense

The Pittsburgh Steelers added two defenders during the off-season that no one could have predicted would make such a difference in a close 2024 NFL Week 1 game against the Atlanta Falcons. Their interceptions helped snuff the Falcons offense and give their counterparts on offense and special teams opportunities to grab the 18-10 win in the season opener.

On the Falcons’ second offensive series, Kirk Cousins made a short pass to running back Bijan Robinson for a gain of nine yards. On the very next play, Cousins – who operated out of the shot for the majority of the game – attempted a pass over the middle to Drake London that safety DeShon Elliott intercepted.

Elliott was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens but last played with the Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins before signing with the Steelers in March.

Later in the game, up 15-10, the Steelers got another interception. The Falcons started their drive from their own 40 with just 3:19 left in the game. On 1st & 10 from the 47, Cousins attempted a pass to Ray-Ray McCloud that cornerback Donte Jackson snagged and returned for 49 yards before he was finally tackled at the Atlanta 18.

Jackson joined the Steelers in March in a trade deal for Diontae Johnson (and and exchange of draft picks for both teams) with the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers drafted Jackson from LSU and he was active through Week 10 of the 2022 NFL season before suffering a season-ending Achilles tendon injury.

The Jackson interception set up the sixth successful Chris Boswell field goal that gave the Steelers an 18-10 lead they would not relinquish.
