Steelers finalize 2019 NFL Draft by adding Derwin Gray to offensive line
The Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up the 2019 NFL Draft on Saturday afternoon by bolstering their depth along the offensive line. Maryland lineman Derwin Gray was selected as the 219th overall pick and will join fellow former ‘Terps’ Sean Davis and Darrius Heyward-Bey on the Steelers roster.
Grey played left tackle throughout his career, starting 22-of-24 games in his final two seasons at Maryland. In 2018, Grey helped block for the third-best rushing offense in the Big Ten, earning All-Big Ten honorable mention. He had a decent outing at the Pro Scouting Combine, putting together 26 bench press reps and showcasing exceptional upper body power.
As Maryland’s starter at left tackle, Gray was excellent on the blind side. A thick-bodied blocker, Gray utilizes great hand skills and leverage against opponents. The Steelers will enjoy the way Gray can open up rushing lanes for their offensive backs. With an 82.5-inch wingspan and 10-inch hands, Gray looks to be a nice addition to an offensive line that traded Marcus Gilbert to the Arizona Cardinals in the offseason.

With less depth at the offensive guard position – just Ramon Foster and David DeCastro listed at the position on the official roster as of today – Gray is likely to be given snaps at training camp at both guard and tackle. His disposition can get nasty, something the Steelers love in their offensive linemen. Gray joins a squad that is looking toward the future with Chukwuma Okorafor, R.J. Prince, Zach Banner, Matt Feiler, and Jerald Hawkins. Bring on the camp competitions. I’m ready to see how Gray translates his big collegiate play once he puts on a Steelers jersey.
