Plays of the Year: Cam-to-Cam connection keep Steelers hopes alive

Steel City Underground presents “Plays of the Year” featuring the top runs, catches, hits and everything else in-between from the Pittsburgh Steelers 2021 season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers traveled on the road to Los Angeles to face the Chargers for a Sunday Night Football contest during Week 11. However, going in, Pittsburgh was so short-handed on defense that no one was giving them a chance.

Among the names missing were T.J. Watt, among the league’s leaders in sacks at the time, with 12.5. Top-level players in the secondary including Minkah Fitzpatrick and Joe Haden were also out of action.

The Chargers might’ve wished that one more elite player, PFF’s top-rated defensive tackle of the week Cameron Heyward, was among those inactives!

Miraculously, the Steelers came back from a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter to get within seven of the LA lead. All they would need is a splash play to flip more momentum in the favor: a pair of Camerons would be all too happy to oblige.

On a 2nd-and-10 from LA’s 25-yard-line, Chargers QB Justin Herbert stepped back to pass and would meet the mountain of humanity that is Heyward, who would bat Herbert’s attempted pass in the air. Steelers CB Cameron Sutton field that ball like a center fielder, getting up underneath it for a game-altering interception.

Three plays later the Steelers would tie the game, and a series later, they would actually take a three-point lead. However, the Steelers would still succumb to the Chargers by a final score of 41-37, dropping to a 5-4-1 record on the season.
