Plays of the Year: Pickett finds Pickens for 41-yard game-winning touchdown

Steel City Underground presents “Plays of the Year” featuring the top runs, catches, hits and everything else in-between from the Pittsburgh Steelers 2023 season.

In Week 5 of the 2023 NFL regular season, the Pittsburgh Steelers hosted the Baltimore Ravens for rights to the top of the AFC North. Baltimore entered the game with one more win than Pittsburgh, but Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin had emphasized changes were going to be made and called out his team to show more intensity.

Through all of the first half, the appearance on the field was that the Ravens were going to have their way with the Steelers. It wasn’t what fans expected and they were audible with their feelings.

The Steelers came out in the third quarter and, after a mistake on a punt return, watched rookie Joey Porter Jr. intercept Lamar Jackson to give the Pittsburgh offense the ball back. Kenny Pickett ran into the field and took command.

With a mix of runs and sharp passes, Pickett and the offense got a first down as the two-minute warning break occurred.

After a short Jaylen Warren run, on second-and-nine from the Baltimore 41, with just 1:17 left on the game clock, Pickett pulled the trigger for a deep pass to the right to George Pickens for what became the game-winning touchdown.

The synergy between Pickett and Pickens was back, on full display, in a game the Steelers needed to win in order to get back on track heading into the bye week.

The Steelers defense shut down Jackson and the Ravens offense to prevent any hope at a comeback attempt when Alex Highsmith got a strip-sack that was recovered by T.J. Watt. Pittsburgh would improve to 3-2 with a 17-10 victory.
