Week 14 WTF Moments in the NFL
First, thank you for all of the listeners that joined our premiere of the WTF “unscripted” podcast. I had a great time with our Editor in Chief, Joe Kuzma, just ranting and raving about week 14.
Now it’s time to rant some more, with the weekly column…
Fired
Let’s start with the obvious: Jeff Fisher.
Coach, or now former Rams coach, Jeff Fisher, was signed to a 2-year extension within the last week; which came to the shock of, well, everyone.
That news made last week’s WTF column.
After the 42-14 beating last Sunday, Fisher tied for the most losses as a coach in NFL history.
Was he worth the extension?
Well, the Rams and fans had had enough, and he was fired on Monday.
Finally.
That may seem like the WTF here, but the crazier thing is, the Rams had a game on Thursday; a short week for interim coach John Fassel to get “his” team prepared.
WTF.
It shouldn’t be a surprise the Rams lost 24-3 on Thursday… at least the team sent Jeff off with a year of his salary guaranteed via the extension.
Enjoy retirement. At least you’re in sunny California, and not Missouri.
Bad day in Buffalo
The most ridiculous game of last weekend had to be the Steeler’s game. (Right?)
Ben had probably the “worst day at the office” he has had in a long time:
- QB Rating in the 30’s
- 3 interceptions
- Ill-advised throws in a very snowy game
But that isn’t the WTF… well it is, but the thing that had most of us thinking WTF, was Le’Veon Bell.
What can Bell do that he hasn’t all ready done in this game?
He set the Steelers record for rushing yards (239) in a game, and with 298 total yards from scrimmage, he had more totals yards than 8 NFL teams.
Absolutely WTF!?!
But wow, what a player!
Random Injuries
Next we had a couple of guys in concussion protocol (Javon Hargrave and BJ Finney) and we are not sure how they got there.
Going back and watching the game a few times, it is hard to tell where that could have happened.
Then Marcus Gilbert ends on the injury report mid-week.
WTF?
Can’t we stay healthy for one week?
Sammie Coates saga continues
Coach Tomlin’s commented on Sammie Coates in his press conference no Tuesday, saying to the media:
“Obviously, he’s healthy enough to play for us. He’s been playing and has been a really positive contributor on special teams. We just have to continue to work through the present circumstances.
I know you guys think there’s more to that story than what it is, but it’s not. The guy’s got two broken fingers on one hand. It makes it difficult to catch the ball consistently. Particularly, when he’s working back toward the quarterback. Until we can get some comfort or clarity in that area, his offensive contributions are going to be limited.”
Well, that being said Coach, WTF?
We do think there is more to it.
First, how did he hurt that hand anyway? He said he didn’t know.
He had stitches over 2 months ago now, and that’s when he found out he broke a finger too.
Then about a month ago, we are told he broke 2 fingers.
Yes, we would like to know what happened, I mean, come on. Why is it taking him so long to recover, when he has been so limited and stitched up, and assuming, fingers immobilized?
After reduction, immobilization, and 3-4 weeks of healing, the prognosis for the bones coming together and healing properly is excellent for a broken finger. Mobility is usually back after the 4th week, and at 6 weeks he should be at full capacity.
He’s at 8 weeks now? WTF?
Does he keep doing damage by playing special teams, or practicing?
After all, he did see a few snaps (5) and 3 targets against the Colts, and was on the field for 4 plays against the Giants; but only one snap against the Bills?
Just saying… something is awry here.
Number what…?
Let’s give the Patriots a shout out: they played what the media keeps calling the “Number one defense in the NFL”, the Baltimore Ravens.
Um Okay. Whatever.
Tom Brady was 25/38 and threw for 406 yards with 3 TD’s. He was picked once but who cares really?
The Pats put up 30 points against this supposedly great Ravens team, even with 2 ridiculous miscues from the special teams unit (not sure what they were doing!).
Thanks Pats.
Last time I say that… they helped the Steelers obtain first place in the AFC North.
Final thoughts
Next up, the Steelers are in Cincy.
Burfict is back, and even though the Bengals have little chance of making the postseason, expect them to try and be the spoilers for the Steelers on the road.
Our WTF for week 15 will most likely start with that game!
