Watching the Super Bowl as a Steelers fan

As a Steelers fan, watching Super Bowl this year is going to tough.

From day one I believed that this year’s Steelers team was going to make it all the way. After losing in the AFC Championship game to the rival New England Patriots, I was heart-broken.

I have now recovered from the loss, and am taking a new perspective on Super Bowl 51. Today I will discuss the pros and cons of each team winning it all and taking home the Lombardi Trophy.

Patriots Win

Pros

If you are a Steelers fan, like me, you may be thinking there is no way I’m rooting for the team that just beat me!

In fact, this may be the reason you want them to win: many think if you get beat by the best, you could be considered the second best.

Let’s be honest: who cares if you’re second-best. Like the great Ricky Bobby once said, “If you ain’t first, you’re last.”

Another reason why you may want the Patriots to win, is because you want to witness history. Tom Brady is playing in his seventh Super Bowl, and if he wins, that will give him five Super Bowl rings.

The most by any quarterback.

There comes a time where every fan has to respect greatness, and maybe the time is now.

Cons

I believe I am in the majority of Steelers fans when I say, I want the Patriots to lose.

There are many reasons behind this decision.

First, the New England Patriots are our rival, and how could any “yinzer” root for Brady and Belichick! I really dislike Brady and Belichick, and credit that to the success they have had on the field. It’s very easy to hate greatness, especially when greatness continues to beat your team.

I also want the Patriots to lose because I don’t want them getting any closer to the Steelers record six Super Bowls.

Falcons Win

Pro

It is going to be easy cheering for the Atlanta Falcons, since they started out as underdogs from the beginning of the season. Several so called “experts” had them finishing 3rd or even 4th in the NFC South.

Matt Ryan has proven he is a capable NFL quarterback and it would be great for him to end his MVP season with a Super Bowl win.

Also the Atlanta Falcons have never won a Super Bowl in franchise history.

If you are a fan of the NFL, its always great when a new team and city get to celebrate a championship.

(Sorry Pittsburgh, but this year we have to share the wealth.)

Cons

There are very few cons, if any, that come with a Falcons Super Bowl 51 win.

I can only think of one minor reason why a Steelers fan may not want the Falcons to win.

Basically everyone in Pittsburgh believes Antonio Brown is the best wide receiver in the league.

If the Falcons win that means Julio Jones will get a ring. If you’re like me you’re always arguing on social media about who’s the better wideout. If Julio Jones has a ring and Antonio Brown doesn’t that may have a huge impact in arguments about who the best wide receiver is.

It is a silly and minor reason, but I can guarantee you Falcons fans will bring it up and rightfully so.
